Playing 3D games and animations inside your browser is nothing new, but it could only be accomplished through the use of proprietary plugins.  Then WebGL came along, allowing for 3D graphics inside the browser with absolutely no plugins, using ordinary javascript alongside shader language code, ushering in a wave of web-based minecraft clones, interactive music videos, and data-visualization with a whole new dimension of presentational capability.
